Artful Confusion

Art is confusing enough without reading William Wilson’s wrap-up comment in his article “Hassam’s ‘Flag Paintings’: A Banner Exhibition” (Aug. 28): “Believe in this or you are cast into outer darkness.” And then he adds: “What do you suppose that means?”
To end his modestly interesting review of Hassam’s “Flag Paintings” on this Dantesque note of morbidity is very depressing.
I used to think the paintings were nice. Now I don’t know what to think. Thanks a lot.
