ATHENS — A passenger train derailed near Athens on Friday, killing seven people and injuring 50 others, the semiofficial Athens News Agency said Friday.
The accident occurred at about noon when three of the five cars jumped the rails at Kinetta, about 25 miles west of Athens.
The injured included five Americans, two French, one Briton and one Spaniard, all believed to be tourists. All were hospitalized, the news agency said.
Hospital sources identified the Americans as Richard and David Baby, David Sutton, Angela Hayen, and Simon Tames. Their ages and addresses were not immediately available.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.
The train was on its way to Kyparissia, near ancient Olympia in the Peloponnese Peninsula, an area known for its historic sites.
