Warning that professional athletes are not above the law, a Toronto judge Wednesday sentenced Minnesota North Stars forward Dino Ciccarelli to one day in jail and fined him $1,000 for hitting another player with his stick.
Ciccarelli, 28, was charged with hitting Luke Richardson of the Toronto Maple Leafs over the head three times with his hockey stick during a National Hockey League game Jan. 6.
Ciccarelli was released after the sentencing when his lawyer, Don Houston, filed an appeal.
