Israeli troops thrust 12 miles into southern Lebanon on a “search-and-destroy†mission, and five pro-Iranian guerrillas were killed, an army spokesman said. Six Israeli soldiers were wounded in the action, said the spokesman, who refused to give any other details. Lebanese security officials said Israeli troops, backed by artillery and helicopter gunships, pushed out from Israel’s self-declared “security zone†inside southern Lebanon to engage the guerrillas. They said Israeli artillery pounded at least four Shia Muslim villages.
