A Saugus man who barricaded himself in his home after firing a rifle shot at his wife surrendered after a five-hour standoff with a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department special weapons team, authorities said Wednesday.
Garl Forrest, 59, surrendered at 10:20 p.m Tuesday at his home in the 30200 block of Bouquet Canyon Road, sheriff’s deputies said. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and was being held in the jail ward of the County-USC Medical Center, where he was being treated for an unspecified heart condition.
Authorities did not disclose what caused the incident, but deputies were called to the home about 5:30 p.m. after Forrest allegedly fired a shot from the front window of his house at a car carrying his wife and child as it drove away from the home. The shot did not strike the car, and no one was injured.
The sheriff’s special weapons team surrounded the house and tried to make contact with Forrest but was unsuccessful, deputies said. About five hours later Forrest walked out the front door and surrendered. Deputies said they found several weapons in the home.
