Contaminant Test for Landfill Gas
California residents owe their deepest gratitude to Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) for his bill requiring companies that draw gas from landfills to test it for vinyl chloride before delivery to consumers (Times, Aug. 21).
It is too late for Monterey Park and Montebello residents who were exposed to the malicious and avaricious conduct of Southern California Gas Co. and Getty Synthetic Fuels.
These companies knew that the gas extracted from Operating Industries dump in Monterey Park was contaminated with vinyl chloride, benzene and other known cancer-causing chemicals. Yet the gas company continued to distribute gas from the dump.
