Kicker Ray Wersching, who ranks ninth among National Football League all-time scoring leaders, and veteran running back Joe Cribbs, were released Monday by the San Francisco 49ers. Both players asked to be cut.

Wersching, 38, played for the 49ers for 11 seasons and held most of the team’s kicking records, including 190 field goals and 409 extra points. He broke into the NFL in 1973 with San Diego and scored 1,122 points in 16 seasons.

Cribbs, 30, rushed for 890 yards during his two seasons with the 49ers. An eight-year professional, he was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills before the 1986 season. He started in the backfield most of that season and was used mostly as a backup in last year.
