An Encinitas woman died at about 8 p.m. Sunday after a burning cigarette set her trailer home on fire, said Encinitas Fire Department spokesman Steve Marvin.

Ann Perkins, whom authorities believe was about 60 years old, apparently died of smoke inhalation, Marvin said.

A neighbor saw light smoke coming from Perkins’ home in the Rancho Trailer Park on Vulcan Avenue, broke in and put out most of the fire with a garden hose, Marvin said. When firefighters reached the scene, they found Perkins dead in her bedroom.

The woman apparently lived alone, and cigarette burns on the mattress “are consistent†with the theory that a cigarette caused the fire, Marvin said.
