Copter Fired on; 6 Men Arrested
Six men are being held by police on suspicion of firing as many as five shots at a helicopter that was carrying sightseers over Los Angeles Harbor on Sunday afternoon.
The shots missed the helicopter, which transported an undetermined number of passengers around the harbor about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Los Angeles Police Detective Larry Kallestad.
Pilot Jeff Carlson, 30, of Ports O’ Call Helicopter Sightseeing Tours, told police he was unaware that shots had been fired.
A witness told police that he saw one man standing in a parking lot on Terminal Way and firing a pistol at the helicopter, Kallestad said.
Police went to the lot, where they arrested David Renteria, 36, of Pico Rivera and five Los Angeles men: Carlos Gonzalez, 56, Pedro Mata, 30, Tobias Renteria, 34, Montenegro Reyes, 25, and Eduardo Romero, 29. All were being held on $5,000 bail pending further investigation.
