McCarthy
If Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy went to Washington to “save†California’s coast, it sure fooled me. Maybe he went to save his dying Senate campaign, but he failed even in that.
Really, if McCarthy thinks that leadership is playing the straight man to Sen. J. Bennett Johnston’s (D-La.) manipulations, he is wrong. McCarthy tried to further his own ambitions at the expense of Alaska’s Bristol Bay, and, in the end, it’s going to take Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) to extricate him from it. In the process, McCarthy has embarrassed environmentalists around the state. Real environmentalists want to protect the total environment, and not sell out a part of it for a handful of votes.
