Coe Out of Running in Olympics
BIRMINGHAM, England — An era in British sports came to an end today when Sebastian Coe, who spawned a generation of record-breaking middle-distance running stars, was left off the roster for next month’s Olympic Games.
Coe, 31, who has broken 12 world records in his career, was denied the chance of a third straight 1,500-meter Olympic gold medal when he was omitted from both that event and the 800 meters. With former Olympic 800-meter champion Steve Ovett also left off the biggest British team ever, only Steve Cram of the country’s big-name middle-distance runners will be in action in Seoul, South Korea.
