Waves of planes dropped 1,450 paratroopers over a remote military range in Twentynine Palms in the first phase of the Gallant Eagle ’88 war games. The exercise, which runs through Tuesday, involves 28,000 service personnel from numerous bases. The Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are involved in the exercise, designed to train and test the capabilities of the U.S. Central Command.
