CNW Offers to Cut Fewer Jobs to Avoid Strike

CHICAGO — CNW Corp. said it offered to cut 689 brakemen from its payroll, down from 1,156 positions it was seeking to eliminate from its railroad subsidiary, in a move designed to avoid a United Transportation Union strike.
The proposal embraces the recommendations of the Presidential Emergency Board.
