State Strengthens Rules for Fire Retardant Roofs
Fire-retardant roofing materials must now be used in many areas when roofs are replaced, according to new state fire marshal regulations.
The areas where responsibility for fire safety falls to state agencies must be designated by the director of forestry. They could include more than 35 million acres and could affect more than 25% of the state’s population.
The regulations state that when 50% or more of a roof is replaced, or where new construction is involved, fire-retardant roofing materials must be used. The materials must qualify for at least a Class C rating.
