Golden West Gallery

Contrary to testimony given the City Council of Huntington Beach on July 19, the third largest city in Orange County does have an art gallery in its boundaries. The gallery is on the Golden West College campus and overlooks a colorfully landscaped Fine Arts Courtyard.

The new gallery season opens on Aug. 29, and again as they have done in years past, Patrons, a 15-year-old campus support group, will act as docents.

Golden West College, suffering financially as are all community colleges, is truly a cultural asset to Huntington Beach, having in addition to the Art Gallery a fine theater for the performing arts. I feel city cultural affairs supervisor Naida Osline and her group would have served the city better had they supported gifts and grants to the established gallery and theater.

As a 20-year resident of Huntington Beach, I commend Mayor John Erskine and Councilman Tom Mays for voting against purchase of the old Edison Building--$758,000 is just the tip of the iceberg.
