Cherokee Group said Shearson Lehman Hutton is helping a committee of its board members evaluate a $161-million buyout bid from an investor group that includes some Cherokee executives. Two weeks ago, Cherokee Chairman James P. Argyropoulos, who owns 14.5% of the Sunland apparel maker’s stock, dropped out of the investment group, saying he did not want to burden the company with the large amount of debt needed to finance the deal.
