Jackson and the Democrats in Atlanta

Jackson’s address to the convention was outstanding because in Lincoln’s memorable phrase in his first inaugural, Jackson “touched . . . the better angels of our nature” instead of our propensity toward gain and self-aggrandizement. It was also a warning that unless we lessen the gross inequalities in our vaunted democracy, much tarnished and diminished by recent trends, whatever goodness, greatness and security that yet remain in the national heritage are in jeopardy.
