American Express reported second-quarter net income of $281 million, contrasted with a loss of $600,000 last year. Revenue totaled $5.6 billion, up 22%. The New York-based diversified financial, travel and charge card company said the results reflect record gains in travel related services and IDS Financial Services. The firm’s Shearson Lehman Hutton unit posted profit of $51 million, off 20%, primarily because of nonrecurring expenses from the E. F. Hutton acquisition. Revenue reached $2.5 billion, up 47%.
