Setting the Standard

I read with great interest and gratification about Standard Brands Paints granting the air rights over their home-decorating center in San Francisco for low-income housing. Actions like these make one think that this old world is all right. (“Store Gives Air Rights for Housing Project,” June 25.)
At first, Stuart Buchalter, chief executive of Standard Brands, was so strongly against the idea that, when he was contacted about it, he said, “Are you nuts?” But it’s to his credit he changed his mind.
Buchalter deserves a medal for his “humanitarianism” and I hope that this action will set a “standard” for all businesses.
