Local News in Brief : San Juan Capistrano : City Is Unclogging Traffic on Highway
The city’s efforts to unclog traffic entering and leaving Interstate 5 at Ortega Highway apparently are working, city officials said.
To accomplish that goal, the city lengthened traffic signal cycles at three consecutive intersections: Ortega Highway at Del Obispo Street, El Camino Real and the freeway ramps--from 60 to 70 seconds during afternoon commute times, city spokesman Jeffrey Parker said.
Parker said that although 10 seconds seems a very short increase, it has been sufficient to allow more traffic to flow through the congested stretch of Ortega Highway, which is also the main freeway access for central San Juan Capistrano.
“It allows several more cars to get through, so you don’t have people clogging the middle of the intersections,†he said.
