N.Y. Friars Admits First Women

NEW YORK — The New York Friars Club elected its first female members today, none of whom should need membership cards to be recognized at the door.
Barbara Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Eydie Gorme, Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, Dinah Shore, Phyllis Diller and Martha Raye all were elected to honorary membership after the club’s board of governors changed its constitution to allow female members. Liza Minnelli, who had applied for regular membership, was also approved. Under court order, the California Friars Club in Beverly Hills voted last year to admit women.
