Obituaries : Phyllis de Young Tucker; S.F. Publishing Family Member
HILLSBOROUGH, Calif. — Phyllis de Young Tucker, a longtime San Francisco civic leader and the last surviving daughter of San Francisco Chronicle co-founder M. H. de Young, died Tuesday night. She was 96.
Mrs. Tucker, who founded Guide Dogs for the Blind, died at her home at the Burlingame Country Club.
She was a founder and chairman of the San Francisco Cotillion and served as the chairman of the San Francisco Symphony Assn. She was a governor of the San Francisco Opera Assn. and president of the San Francisco Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Tucker was one of the owners of the Chronicle and a director of the Chronicle Publishing Co. She was married to Nion R. Tucker, a banker who died in 1950 at the age of 64.
They had a daughter, Nan Tucker McEvoy, who survives, and a son, Nion Jr., a Marine lieutenant who died on Iwo Jima in World War II. Survivors also include a grandson, Nion Tucker McEvoy of San Francisco.
