Yoji Kuri: The Maniac Age (Pioneer: Animation Animation Series). Although his films are virtually unknown in this country, Yoji Kuri is one of Japan’s most respected animators and has won numerous awards at international festivals. His minimalist shorts have little in common with Hollywood cartoons: Cold, alienated and often misogynistic, they reflect contemporary Japanese culture more accurately than the homogenized work the Tokyo studios churn out for American television. ** 1/2
