American Legion Baseball : Reseda’s Shwartzer, Ogle Flex Muscles

Kevin Ogle and Mike Shwartzer put on a hitting clinic as Reseda swept Woodland Hills East, 12-10 and 7-6, in a District 20 doubleheader at Reseda High on Saturday.

Ogle was 5 for 8 with 2 doubles, 3 home runs and 6 runs batted in and Swartzer was 6 for 7 with a double, triple, 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. Ogle walked three times and Swartzer walked twice.

Ogle’s third home run in the bottom of the eighth capped Reseda’s come-from-behind victory in the second game.

Reseda (7-7) also came from behind in the first game. Trailing, 6-4, after three innings, Reseda scored five runs in the top of the fourth and led thereafter.

Reseda did not have the only hot hitters. Mike Belfield and Jason Shapiro had productive days at the plate for Woodland Hills East (8-5).

Belfield was 2 for 3 with a grand slam, a triple and six RBIs in the first game. Shapiro was 6 for 9 and scored four runs in the doubleheader.

Woodland Hills West 11, Chatsworth 1--With half its players competing in the L. A. Games baseball tournament, Chatsworth was walloped by Woodland Hills West in the District 20 game at El Camino Real High.

Mike Teich threw a four-hitter, struck out 11 batters and walked five for Woodland Hills West (11-2), and teammates Bryce Welch and Del Marine each had two hits.

Welch drove in two runs with his sixth home run and Marine had four RBIs and stole two bases.

Keith Giller (1-1) took the loss for Chatsworth (10-3).

West Hills 10-11, Reseda-Cleveland 1-6--Chaminade teammates Greg Baumgartner and Chris DeCristo threw complete-game victories for West Hills in the District 20 doubleheader at Chaminade High.

While Baumgartner struggled in the first game (eight hits, 11 walks), DeCristo was razor sharp in the second. He allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked three.

Aaron Weiss and Steve Roberts each went 2 for 3 in the first game and Weiss, DeCristo, Baumgartner and Colin Havert each had two hits in the second game.

Camarillo 17, Brighton 13--The Scorpions jumped out to an 11-0 lead and then held on to win a Cherry Creek tournament consolation game in Denver that was delayed 45 minutes by rain.

Camarillo, which won last year’s consolation championship, plays Hillcrest of Salt Lake City today for the consolation championship.

Camarillo had 17 hits and eight of its starters had at least one hit. John Swanson, Damon Dicus, Juan Cuellar, Kenny Knight and Nate Avery each had two hits.

Both of Knight’s hits were home runs, giving him four in his past four games.

Chris Sorich added four hits, four RBIs and a home run for the Scorpions. Brighton, which is also from Salt Lake City, had 17 hits but committed nine errors.

Newhall-Saugus (SC) 5-8, Mission Hills 0-7--Roger Salkeld pitched a three-hitter in the first game and Newhall-Saugus scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the second game of the District 20 doubleheader at Alemany High.

Trailing, 6-2, in the second game, Mission Hills narrowed the margin to one run on Jon Beauchemin’s three-run homer.

Mission Hills tied the score later in the inning on a bases-loaded walk and took the lead on an error but could not withstand Saugus’ last-inning comeback.
