SEOUL — South Korea observed the 38th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War on Saturday with nationwide rallies denouncing Communist North Korea.
Officials said hundreds of thousands of people attended rallies and memorial services across the country. Korea was divided in 1945, when U.S. and Soviet troops came to facilitate the surrender of Japan, which had colonized the peninsula for 35 years.
The Korean War began June 25, 1950, when North Korean troops poured across the dividing line. Three days later, they occupied the capital of Seoul. Fighting raged until an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953.
