The results of the recent primary election in the 5th Supervisorial District indicate that voters will be treated to a lively contest between now and November.

Two-term incumbent Supervisor Mike Antonovich garnered endorsements including President Reagan, but received only 45% of the vote. His list of supporters from all levels of government was overwhelming as was his campaign expenditures, reported to be $1.1 million. Cost per vote received was $7.50. His opponent in the November race is Baxter Ward, a former two-term supervisor in the 5th District. Ward had no mass mailing to inform voters of individuals and groups who supported him. In fact, he spent no more than $700 to gain the runner-up spot. Cost per vote here was less than one cent!

We have all heard that money talks and is the mother’s milk of politics. It appears that 55% of the voters were more concerned with where the Antonovich campaign money came from (developers?) than what it was able to buy.
