More big doings in the Big Apple: According to the New York Times, the Metropolitan Opera plans a part-time move to the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Majestic Theater as part of an experiment scheduled to start with the 1991 season. The newly restored Majestic will provide the backdrop for new and small-scale works and for innovative productions that may not be suitable for performances at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center, said Bruce Crawford, the Met’s general manager. The move would mark a return of sorts for the Met. Even before the current academy building opened in 1907, the Met offered Tuesday night performances in Brooklyn during its regular season for 30 years.
