Garvey Schools : Official Quits Over Dispute
Elena B. Wong, Garvey School District’s assistant superintendent for instructional services, has resigned, citing discord between some school board members and departing Supt. Andrew J. Viscovich.
Wong said last week her resignation was prompted by the board’s 3-2 decision in March to notify her that budget difficulties could result in modification or elimination of her job. The board’s action overruled a recommendation by Viscovich.
Viscovich resigned in March because of conflicts with the board. He has been named superintendent of the Berkeley Unified School District and will begin that job next month.
Wong, 46, will take a job next month as associate superintendent of the Stockton Unified School District.
Wong said she began looking for another job when it appeared to her that the board lacked confidence in Viscovich and, in turn, her. But “it was more than Dr. Viscovich’s leaving,†Wong said of her resignation. “I was ready to leave.â€
Wong began her job with Garvey 3 1/2 years ago.
