The Chinese government, in an extraordinary warning carried on national television, urged universities to control campus unrest and severely punish those who violate school discipline. Recent demonstrations have been staged by students from prestigious Beijing University, but the government warning implied that unpublicized incidents may have occurred elsewhere. According to the official New China News Agency, the State Education Commission criticized some students for lacking a correct understanding of China’s economic changes. The unrest at the university began June 2, when students marched in protest of the slaying of a classmate. The students later raised other issues.
