Spanish naval authorities immobilized the steering gear of the Greenpeace ship Sirius at Ibiza when it tried to interfere with the entry of a U.S. aircraft carrier at nearby Majorca Island, Ibiza port officials said. Earlier, crew members of the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower turned water hoses on anti-nuclear protesters in four rubber dinghies launched from the 152-foot Sirius who tried to stop the warship from entering the port of Palma. A Greenpeace official said the environmental group was protesting Spain’s allowing nuclear weapons into its territorial waters in violation of a 1986 referendum. Greenpeace says the carrier is equipped with nuclear arms.
