Ex-Gov. Mecham’s Trial Opens

PHOENIX — Former Gov. Evan Mecham’s trial on charges of concealing a $350,000 campaign loan opened today, 90 minutes after the Arizona Supreme Court refused to intercede.
The court refused to cancel or delay the trial despite a last-minute plea Wednesday to dismiss the charges, return the case to a grand jury or delay the trial so the justices could consider the matter further. Mecham was removed from office April 4 because of his Senate conviction on two unrelated impeachment charges. He faces up to 22 years in prison if convicted on all six counts of perjury, willful concealment and filing false documents.
