Lebanese Muslims observed a general strike to commemorate the first anniversary of the assassination of Premier Rashid Karami. Most businesses in mainly Muslim West Beirut and in many other Muslim areas nationwide were closed. Traffic at Beirut International Airport was stopped for one hour to honor the late Muslim leader. Karami, a pro-Syrian politician, was killed last year when a bomb exploded on a helicopter taking him from the northern port of Tripoli to Beirut. Pro-Syrian Muslims and leftist officials have accused the Christian-led Lebanese army and President Amin Gemayel, a Christian, of not working hard enough to find the killers.
