NCAA Baseball : Stanford, Arizona St. Gain World Series Berths

Frank Carey went 4 for 4 and scored five runs to lead Stanford to a 16-2 rout of Kentucky Tuesday in the championship game of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division 1 Northeast Regional playoff at New Britain, Conn.
Carey, a junior second baseman, also knocked in five runs in the championship game.
Stanford, now 41-22, is the defending national champion. With the victory, the Cardinal advanced to the College Baseball World Series in Omaha, Neb., which starts Friday.
Pitcher Stan Spencer allowed seven hits and two earned runs. The freshman right-hander also struck out three and walked just one to improve his record to 6-2.
Tim Spehr broke a 3-3 tie with a solo home run, and Arizona State went on to beat Pepperdine, 10-5, late Monday night at Tempe, Ariz., in the final game of the NCAA West II Regional tournament.
The victory gives Arizona State a berth in the College World Series.
Spehr had belted two homers in an earlier game which ASU won, 11-4. The Sun Devils (56-11) had to win the game against Pepperdine, which was unbeaten in the tournament, to force the championship showdown.
