Whittier : Groups to Get Quake Aid
Five nonprofit groups will receive $948,000 from the state this week to repair earthquake damage to their facilities.
The largest grant will be $315,000 to the YMCA of Greater Whittier, followed by $310,000 to the Whittier Salvation Army and $265,000 to the Rio Hondo chapter of the American Red Cross. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Whittier will receive $32,000 and the East Whittier Women’s Improvement Club $26,000.
The money is part of an earthquake assistance package approved by the Legislature last November. Lawmakers approved a bill by Assemblyman Frank Hill (R-Whittier) to help nonprofit agencies repair earthquake damage that was not covered by federal or state relief efforts.
