Kin in Florida Reports Visit by Singleton
TAMPA, Fla. — Rapist-mutilator Lawrence Singleton visited a relative in the Tampa area this week after completing his probation in California, but his most recent whereabouts were unknown.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Maj. John Cacciatore said a relative confirmed by telephone Thursday that Singleton, 60, had visited her this week.
“I was told that he was here, but now he’s gone,†Cacciatore said. “I don’t know where he’s gone. It’s not that we’re not concerned. We just don’t know.â€
Singleton, a native of Tampa, was convicted in California of raping a teen-ager and chopping off her forearms with an ax, a crime he still denies committing.
He was sentenced to 14 years in prison but was paroled last year after serving eight years.
Hillsborough officials said they are not keeping track of Singleton because he is legally a free man and will receive the same treatment and protection as other citizens. Officials in California say his parole officially ended Monday and he is under no obligation to tell anyone where he is going.
