United Press International
WASHINGTON — Nearly 40,000 more students will be graduated from public high schools this year than the previous year, although enrollment in grades 9 through 12 is declining, the Education Department reported Friday.
The department’s Center for Education Statistics forecasts that 2.47 million students will receive diplomas at public high schools for the 1987-88 year, about 1.7% more students than last year’s 2.43 million. For 1985-86, high school graduates totaled 2.38 million.
