Local News in Brief : Museum Bid Rejected

Spokesmen for the Los Angeles Coliseum complex and the business partnership that is proposed to run the facilities are calling unacceptable a request from the state Museum of Science and Industry for partial veto power over events at the Coliseum and Sports Arena.

Museum officials have expressed concern that a private Coliseum manager might schedule so many events that traffic jams and lack of parking could adversely affect attendance at the adjacent Exposition Park museums.

But Joel Ralph, the Coliseum general manager, and Irving Azoff, head of MCA Inc.’s Music Entertainment Group, said that a vote remains scheduled for the Coliseum Commission’s Thursday meeting on the contract as now proposed--meaning museum officials would have no power to block events.

Neither Ralph nor Azoff would predict the outcome. At least six votes on the nine-member commission are required for the private management contract to be ratified, and rejection of the museum request for a veto power might cost the three votes of Museum Board members, who also serve on the Coliseum Commission.
