Eastern Airlines has cut its lowest discount fares by up to 30% in an effort to lure back passengers scared away by the recent federal investigation of the carrier’s safety record. Miami-based Eastern, a subsidiary of Texas Air Corp., rolled back on scheduled increases in its restrictive Maxsaver fare to more than 80 cities and said it would offer the reduced Maxsaver prices from May 1 to June 15. Eastern Vice President John Nelson told a news conference that publicity surrounding the investigation has had a “serious impact” on Eastern’s business, but he declined to specify how much traffic had been lost.
