Virginia Slims to Begin Aug. 1; Former Torrey Pines Golfer Second in Reno Event

The San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club will host the Virginia Slims of San Diego for the second consecutive year.
This year’s $100,000 event will be held Aug. 1-7 and will feature a 32-player draw.
The tournament is part of the 1988 championship series that culminates in the $1 million championships at Madison Square Garden in New York in November. The 55 series events are held in 19 countries and pay $16 million in prize money.
GOLF
UC Irvine’s Mike Suckling, who played at Torrey Pines High School, finished second at the Nevada Reno Spring Invitational at Carson City.
Suckling finished the 54-hole tournament with a six-over-par 222, one shot ahead of San Diego State’s Scott Almquist. Steve Watson of Nevada Reno won the individual title with a 220.
U.S. International finished third at 929, and San Diego State was seventh at 937. Irvine was eighth at 939.
Allison Shapcott and Helen Alfredsson shot opening-round 74s as U.S. International was fourth in the Women’s Southern Intercollegiate Championships at Athens, Ga.
Host Georgia is in first with 294, Ohio State second with 302 and Auburn third with 307. USIU was at 309.
Stephanie Lowe of Georgia and Elizabeth MacFie of South Carolina held the individual lead at one-under 71.
SOCCER
The San Diego Nomads will play an exhibition match against a team of all-stars from the National Soccer League today at 5 p.m. at Southwestern College.
The National Soccer League is based in the South Bay area of San Diego.
The Nomads lead the Western Soccer Alliance with a 2-0 record and a maximum 18 points. Admission for the exhibition is $2, with proceeds going to the Nomads.
BASKETBALL
The Southern California Wheelchair Basketball All-Star Game is scheduled for 3 p.m. April 30 at the UC San Diego gymnasium.
