Prep Softball : Cramer, Canyon Catch Villa Park

Canyon High School Coach Lance Eddy had plenty of reason to be worried before Thursday’s Century League softball game at Villa Park.

The Comanches trailed Villa Park by one game in the league standings, and Canyon hadn’t won a game at Villa Park’s home field since 1983.

But senior Katie Cramer (8-3) put an end to the streak by throwing a four-hitter to lead Canyon to a 3-0 victory.

Cramer, a senior right-hander, struck out 7 and allowed only 2 hits while increasing her string of scoreless innings to 34.

The victory moves Canyon (11-6, 3-1) into a first-place tie with Villa Park (9-12, 3-1) in the league race.

The loss also snapped Villa Park’s five-game win streak.

“Shutting these guys out is really something,†Eddy said. “We had to have this game today since a loss would drop us two games back. The girls were up for the game.â€

Canyon scored in the first inning when junior Sherry Panchisin had an infield single. She moved to second and third on wild pitches by Munique Hernandez (5-5) and scored on a double by Jill Player.

In the seventh inning, Canyon added to its lead by scoring two more runs. With one out, Nancy Mugavero singled and moved to third on a base hit by Dalynne Large. Cramer drove in Mugavero with a groundout. Later in the inning, Panchisin singled sharply to left to score Large.

Cramer retired nine of the final 11 Villa Park hitters she faced and got Andrea Jensen to end the game on a groundout.
