Stephen Crutchfield, 33, of Monrovia, father of a Muir High School baseball player, was arrested on suspicion of battery in a dispute with an umpire during a Pacific League game Tuesday at Glendale High.
Glendale was leading, 2-1, in the sixth inning when umpire Dave Samarzich called a Muir runner out after Glendale pulled a hidden-ball trick. During the argument that ensued, Crutchfield allegedly came onto the field and punched Samarzich, according to Glendale Police Sgt. Karl Ward.
When rain began to fall, the umpire called the game and went to Arcadia Methodist Hospital, where he was treated for a bloody mouth and an ankle injury suffered in the scuffle.
