Winnerwald Races to an Upset Victory at 14-1 in La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita

Winnerwald, the longest shot at 14-1 in a field of five, came from far back to win the $79,600 La Puente Stakes by a head over Glad Music Wednesday before a crowd of 14,719 at Santa Anita.
Winnerwald, ridden by Alex Solis and carrying 114 pounds, covered 1 1/8 miles on a sloppy track in 1:50 4/5 and paid $31.40, $9 and $2.80. The victory was worth $45,850.
Glad Music, the 2-1 second-favorite ridden by Laffit Pincay, crossed the finish line 2 1/2 lengths in front of Sunrise Sermon and returned $3.80 and $2.60. Sunrise Sermon, ridden by Chris McCarron, was 3 1/2 lengths ahead of 7-5 favorite Exclusive Nureyev and paid $2.60.
The race was scheduled to be run on Santa Anita’s turf course but was moved to the main track because of rain.
