Local News in Brief : Volunteer Honored for Combatting Racism

The president of Glendale’s Human Relations Council received one of four distinguished volunteer awards presented Monday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Glendale resident Geri Brown, 44, was cited for her efforts in raising community awareness of racism. Brown and three others were chosen by a selection committee of three judges who head large volunteer organizations.

Two years ago, Brown organized the nonprofit council, which offers support and guidance to victims of racial incidents. Brown acted after she learned of the harassment of a black woman who opened a delicatessen in Glendale.

Brown said she was satisfied in knowing that the public is becoming aware of the existence of the council.

“In the beginning, we were told that Glendale doesn’t have a problem,” Brown said. “But I knew we were doing the right thing. It is nice that someone else thinks we are doing the right thing.”
