Wang Laboratories Inc.’s profit rose 284% to $22.7 million, compared to $5.9 million in the year-ago period, the Lowell, Mass., computer maker reported. Revenue, however, inched only 5% higher to $767.9 million, up from $745.9 million over the comparable period last year. Wang had warned the investment community of a slowdown in orders in January and February, but orders improved and met expectations in March, the firm said. The company attributed the dramatic profit rise to stringent cost controls in effect since the founder’s son replaced him as president and chief operating officer 18 months ago, and strong industry response to its Wang Integrated Image Systems.
