Leuzinger 7, Taft 6--Damaso Bautista’s two-out, bases-loaded single capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning and lifted the Olympians in the quarterfinals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament at Redondo.
Bautista drove in two runs with his hit, including Tom Gordon from second base with the game winner.
Leuzinger (8-9) trailed 6-2 entering its half of the seventh after Taft (7-6) scored twice in the top of the inning.
Scott Krueger got the win in relief to even his record at 3-3.
Westchester 6, North Torrance 5--The visiting Comets (8-8-1) saved their best for the last two innings to pull out a victory in the ninth-place quarterfinals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament.
Westchester rallied for five runs in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead and then held North (10-7) without a run in the bottom of the seventh after the Saxons loaded the bases with no outs.
A two-run bloop single by David Sanchez and an RBI single up the middle by Sidney Jackson highlighted the Comets’ five-run outburst in the sixth.
After North loaded the bases in the seventh, Westchester got a strikeout and two fly outs, the last coming on a diving catch by left fielder Dirk Young.
For North, Greg Davis had two hits and an RBI and Richard Matsi keyed a three-run first inning with a two-run single.
Cantwell 7, Mary Star 3--Cantwell scored all its runs in the fifth and sixth innings to post a come-from-behind win in a Camino Real League game in Montebello.
Mary Star (3-3 in league, 9-7 overall) opened a 2-0 lead, but Cantwell erased it with a five-run fifth and a two-run sixth. Bobby Brubeck led Mary Star with an RBI single in the third and a solo home run in the sixth.
Crespi 16, South Torrance 6--Three South pitchers issued 11 walks and gave up eight hits as visiting Crespi romped to victory in the consolation quarterfinals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament.
Greg Baer was 2 for 2 with three RBI for South, which dropped to 7-8-1. Jason Butcher was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI and Ben Norton had two hits and an RBI for the Spartans.
Alemany 13, Mira Costa 1--Mustang pitchers gave up 15 hits as Alemany rolled to an easy win the consolation quarterfinals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament at Alemany. Mira Costa (5-11) had seven hits, led by David Jund with two and one run scored.
