‘Count Your Blessings’
Netherlands, 1987, 99 minutes , 12:15 p.m . Pieter Verhoeff’s somber, adroit, occasionally darkly amusing contemplation of contemporary life, set primarily in an old Amsterdam flat. It centers on a young student too sensitive for her own good and contrasts her with another tenant, an earthy, good-natured ex-pop singer. An unusual and disturbing film, part commentary on the fundamental need for healthy parental love. RECOMMENDED
