Local News in Brief : Irvine : Ground Breaking Set for UCI Center Expansion
- Share via
A ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled at noon Wednesday for the $23-million expansion of UC Irvine’s University Center.
Students will pay for the expansion, having voted in 1986 to finance the project with added fees that go into effect when the enlarged center is ready for use in the fall of 1989.
The expansion will increase the size of the existing 43,000-square-foot University Center to a total of 67,000 square feet, wrapping around the existing two-story structure and, in some areas, adding a third story.
Space for the university bookstore will more than double in the new center.
