College Spring Sports : Two-Run 9th Secures Win for Northridge

Two runs in the top of the ninth inning gave the Cal State Northridge baseball team a 3-2 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game Tuesday at Dominguez Hills.

Northridge’s Jimmy Mitchell singled to left to score Scott Stewart with the winning run after Mark Hebert and Scott McIntyre led off the inning with consecutive doubles and Stewart tripled.

Stewart’s hit scored pinch-runner Randy Thompson and tied the score, 2-2. After Scott Strickland grounded out to third, the Toros (12-19, 3-10 in conference play) intentionally walked John Bonilla to bring up Mitchell.

The Matadors (14-23, 5-7) scored their other run in the second inning, when Chae-Ho Chong and Mark Bowen singled and McIntyre scored Chong with a two-out base hit.

McIntyre and Stewart were each 2 for 3 and Lenn Gilmore also had two hits.

Leo Ramirez (3-5) pitched his second two-hitter of the season. He struck out four and walked four.

Cal Lutheran 2-7, Southern California 4-6--Anthony Espitia had a two-run double to pace host Cal Lutheran’s rally in the second game of the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.

With the Kingsmen leading, 4-2, Espitia led a three-run Cal Lutheran rally in the eighth. Reliever Carl Anderson entered in the ninth to stop a Southern Cal rally after four runs had scored.

Espitia was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. David Leonhardt was also 3 for 4 with two doubles.

Starter Greg Minick (2-5) picked up the win.

In the first game, Cal Lutheran trailed, 4-0, before rallying for two runs in the seventh. Chris Vanole (3-5) allowed nine hits in going the distance.

“We got the good pitching from Vanole, but we just couldn’t get the offense behind him,†Cal Lutheran Coach Rich Hill said.

Cal Lutheran improved to 13-15, 6-5 in district play.

The Master’s 15, Whittier 3--Jeff Holen hit his eighth home run and knocked in three runs in the nonconference game at Whittier.

Mark MacArthur went 3 for 4 with a triple and double and had two RBIs. Tim Kane also doubled for the Mustangs (18-17).

With Master’s leading, 5-3, the Mustangs scored nine runs in the eighth and added a run in the ninth on Holen’s solo homer.

The Mustangs, winners of 11 of the their last 15 games, had 12 hits and committed three errors.

SOFTBALL

Azusa Pacific 2-3, The Master’s 1-2--The Mustangs lost both games of an NAIA District III doubleheader at Azusa Pacific in the final innings.

In the seventh inning of the first game, a single to left scored the winning run for Azusa Pacific. In the second game, Azusa Pacific used two hits, a wild pitch and an error to score the winning run in the final frame.

For Master’s, Michelle Vail (4-6) gave eight hits and one walk while striking out one in first game, and in the second game, Beth Downey went the distance, giving up eight hits and two walks.

The Master’s tied the second game, 2-2, in the top of the seventh when Vail led off with a triple and came home on Terri Meade’s single.

TENNIS

Cal Poly Pomona 7, CS Northridge 2--Alison Kincaid, the No. 2 singles player, won two of three sets in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at Northridge.

CSUN’s No. 1 singles player, Nicole Gillis, didn’t win a game in two sets as Northridge dropped to 7-10, 6-3.
