A car accident at 11:35 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Hamilton Street resulted in unexpected trouble for the driver, authorities said Sunday.

The unlucky driver, having caused a three-vehicle collision, also was found to be driving a stolen car, Costa Mesa police said.

The driver, identified as Francisco Magana, 21, of Costa Mesa, was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Leslie Harrison said.

Harrison said Magana was driving a 1987 Mercury Topaz reported stolen from a rental firm in Riverside. Officers discovered the car had been reported stolen while making a routine accident investigation, Harrison added.

Harrison said the Mercury rear-ended a pickup truck, which in turn hit another pickup truck in front of 574 Hamilton St. One of the trucks then hit the residence at 574 Hamilton St., Harrison said, but he did not immediately have an estimate of damage.

No injuries were reported, Harrison said.
