Funeral services are scheduled Monday for Charles G. Schlegel, an outstanding high school and college athlete who became a prominent Orange County lawyer and school board member.
Schlegel, 60, died of cancer Tuesday night in Santa Ana. He had returned to Orange County last year from Nevada, where he had lived for a number of years. At the time of his death he was practicing law in Santa Ana.
Schlegel attended Santa Ana High School, where he excelled in football and track. He went on to Santa Ana College, where, at 130 pounds, he started as single-wing tailback on the college’s undefeated 1945 team. He transferred to Occidental College, where he was inducted into Occidental’s Hall of Fame in 1951. Schlegel then went to UCLA to study law.
In 1956, Schlegel began practicing law in Orange County. From 1957 to 1961, he was a member of the Santa Ana School District board, where he concentrated on rejuvenating athletics programs at Santa Ana College.
Schlegel and a group of investors organized the Orange County Ramblers of the Continental Football League, which played one season before the league folded in 1966. Since then, he had been active in such community groups as the Lion’s Club and the Red Cross.
Schlegel is survived by his wife, Mary, of Santa Ana; daughter Lauri Rambo of San Marcos; stepdaughter Linda Smith; sister Joan Kamanski of Santa Ana, and seven grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. in Waverley Church at Fairhaven Memorial Cemetery in Santa Ana.
